Losing Pokes

Anyone seen this polka dot blanket?

Anyone seen this polka dot blanket?

About three weeks ago there was a dramatic event in our house.  My daughter burst into her Grammy’s house saying, “Something terrible has happened!”   (Mom wondered what in the world could be so distressing to a 4 year old on a trip to the beach with her Dad who was just stopping by)  “Pokes is gone,” she said in the most pitiful, wistful, voice.

Pokes is really a polka dot blanket that she has had since she was a baby.  She sleeps with pokes every night, takes pokes to school daily for naptime, and though we usually leave it in the car it accompanies us on many outings.  Obviously the baby blanket has developed its own persona with the nickname pokes.  Needless to say the loss has been noticed, A LOT!

She’s had discussions about what has happened to pokes?  Such as “Grammy, do you think pokes got burned up in a fire?”   As well as a couple of nights where she can’t fall asleep because she misses pokes and hopes that her cousins will find pokes and send it to her.

When Martha was here for the TypeA Conference she took her to get a new blanket, not to replace pokes of course, but to help her sleep which has helped for sure.  Grammy has tried to find another pokes and she tells everyone that “Grammy is going to get her another pokes.”  I’ve looked around on the internet, but haven’t found an exact match.   When her Mimi returned from visiting the cousins where pokes was lost, I said lets go welcome Mimi home and she responded in a excited and hopeful voice, “Yes, maybe she has pokes.”

I guess I didn’t really realize what losing a security blanket would mean to a 4 year old.  Maybe I should just tell her too bad, life is full of loss and this is the first of many things you will lose.  But another part of me wants to make it all better for her and find pokes because she will face plenty of loss in her life, so why deal with it now?  It also makes me think about my own attachments to things and different things I use as an adult to cope with not being able to sleep, being worried, or anxious and maybe a blanket isn’t such a bad thing to hold onto, it could be worse.

I also love that she still has hope that pokes will be found.  Sometimes hope is all we have, hope that everything will turn out for the best and that is all I can hope for with pokes!

Laura

Type A Conference ReCap

Deidre, Laura, and Martha at TypeA Conference

Deidre, Laura, and Martha at TypeA Conference

This was our second year at the Type A Conference in Asheville, NC and we thought it was better this year than last!  Here are some of our highlights!

Patti Digh

Yes, the opening speaker gets her own category!  Her opening keynote, Blog is a Verb:  Find Your Voice and Write with Intention had such a wonderful, positive, mindful message that if the conference had ended after her talk we would have been happy!  Some quotes we wrote down from her talk include:

What stories keep me from writing authentically?

What happens when you give up the need to be right?

Yes to yourself looks like no to other people.

When we say I don’t know, we’re vulnerable.

Don’t ask what do you do? Reframe and ask what do you love to do?

We both got Patti’s books Life is a Verb and Creative is a Verb and have already started reading them!  Thanks for challenging and inspiring us to be better writes and better people.

Networking

We had a great time catching up with bloggers we met last year like Heather at Not a DIY Life and meeting new folks, like Diana Orgain author of the the Maternal Instinct Mystery Series who inspired us to work on getting a publishing contract.  Another great feature this year was the Wilsonart Mentor Meetup lunch where we could ask more experienced bloggers questions, Laura had a great time with Cecily who is a professional blogger and social medial consultant.  Thanks to Cecily for answering my questions and giving me some ideas on how to attract more readers.  We met so many great people and it was was great to meet people in person that we follow on Twitter!

Informative Sessions

All the sessions we went to were informative but a couple stand out.  The Mobilizing Your Blog session by Aliza Sherman and Shelly Kramer got us thinking about how accessible our site is to a mobile phone as more and more people began to access sites via their smart phones (and this has motivated me to get a fancier phone in the near future).  The Affilates:  Yes, Even Your Blog Can Earn Revenue session led by Debbie Bookstaber, Allison Fox, and Aprile Parelle gave some ideas on how we could use the blog to make some money (sounds good to me!).  The Breathtaking Blog Photography session led by Jenna Hatfield and Amanda Padgett and Video Editing and Distribution sessions by Danielle Smith, Valerie Rowecamp, and Jendi Pagano, have inspired us to continue to create our blog in new and engaging ways!  We did split up and go to different sessions so we could gather more information!

Radio Interview: Our Voices Out Loud

About a month ago one  Saturday Martha and I were scurrying around trying to find a land line.  Who has a land line?  We desperately needed one for our first radio interview for The Author’s Wellness show.  We were in Southern Pines, NC visiting our parents so we ended up using one at a hotel where another friend was staying.  We planned out what questions we each would answer and even though as teachers we are both used to talking we found ourselves a little anxious before we began.  However, we had a great experience with host Don McCauley and overall it was a fun experience.  We hope you will tune in to listen to our interview on December 8th and 9th on The Wellness Authors Website

     What we learned:

  •                 Stay relaxed and have fun!
  •                 Practice your responses ahead of time
  •                 Trying new things can be challenging, but challenging yourself helps you grow!

Thanks for tuning in to our radio interview and we hope you will continue to try new things to continue growing and expanding your world!

Live Well,

Laura and Martha
