Martha’s Blog: I Love My Body, My Body Loves Me

Goal: I am so proud now that I have completed my first full marathon on December 11, 2010.

It is always awesome to have an extra day added to the weekend. Yay for Labor Day! I started the day off with sleeping in an extra hour. Then, I really started the day off with my run. Since I was only running for three miles, I left my ipod at home. This left my mind all by itself as my body moved step by step. Like always, I did not like the first ten minutes and my mind kept sending my body that message over and over again. One of my action steps for today was to find a good mantra for me to use while running to help me focus my energies. I tried several different ones today. The hardest challenge for me was to get my thoughts to align with my breathing. It helps if I can have a rhythmic mantra. I settled on “I love my body” for a majority of the run. Although, I did switch to “My body loves me” as I ran up the final two hills for the day.  Wouldn’t you know it? My mantra helped carry my up the hill because I wasn’t thinking my usual thoughts of “I hate hills” “I can’t run up hills, so I’ll just walk up this hill.” Lesson for today: I need to spend as much time training my mind as my body for the challenge of the marathon.
