Baby Bumps and Blessings
The Making of a Mindful Maternity
Here we are at 30 weeks, the home stretch! This week I had my first visit with our midwife. She came to my house, which was pretty neat. She took my blood pressure, weighed me, listened to the baby’s heart beat, and measured the size of my belly. My blood pressure was 114/63 and the baby’s heart beat was 149. I measured 26 inches which was a little small as the rule of thumb is to measure within 2 inches of how many weeks you are.
The midwife said the most important thing was to watch my nutrition and make sure I was eating 80 grams of protein a day (I knew this, but now I”ve been tracking daily instead of a few times a week). She also said to keep drinking the chlorophyll to get my hemoglobin levels a little higher, they are within normal, but she’d like them a little higher for birth.
I asked some questions and my older daughter was coloring nearby and listening in. It was a very relaxed, comfortable visit. Before she left she gave me two videos on water birth to watch, so I have homework before our next visit at 32 weeks. I enjoyed the visit and the emphasis on good nutrition and things I could be doing to make sure I am well prepared for birth.
This week I watched the video Gentle Birth Choices and am continuing to read Mindfulness in Motherhood. I’ve been walking for exercise, practicing pre-natal yoga, gathering things to start my pregnancy journal, eating protein, drinking chlorophyll, and I had to stop wearing my wedding ring (it still fits but is pretty tight).
I have a warning out there for other Twitter Moms considering a home birth. I’m on Twitter as @mindfulmom and I look at the hashtag #homebirth to meet other home birth mamas. Many of the tweets are supportive with links to birth stories or other information. However, some links which appear to be in favor of home birth are actually anti home birth. I know this is a controversial topic and when you are doing something that goes against the norm you can expect some negative feedback, but I want people to know that you may click on a link and end up at a very negative site. Click with care!
I anticipate these last 10 weeks will go by very quickly, so I’m trying to soak up every minute!
Live Well,
Laura
